WINDOW BLINDS; TYPES AND BENEFITS

In recent times, the use of window blinds has become increasingly popular. Maybe it is because of how stylish they are, or how they require lower maintenance, but curtains are fast becoming obsolete and window blinds are now the in-thing.

A window blind is a type of window covering, which is typically used to contain the amount of natural light that enters your space. There are different types of window blinds, but there are three basic styles, such as;

  • Roller blinds
  • Venetian blinds
  • Vertical blinds

These blind types all have their unique specifications and uses. They beautify and protect the home in their ways, and some also come in motorised forms, meaning that you don’t have to operate them manually.

Some people wonder what the uses of blinds are, and why you should have them in your home. Asides from using window blinds to beautify your home, there are many other uses, including using blinds for reading. Yes, using window blinds for reading is helpful because it helps to regulate the light that comes in, so as not to affect your eyes if your eyes are sensitive to light.

Before getting into more uses for blinds, we shall discuss further the types of blinds and how functional they are in your home.

    TYPES OF BLINDS

As said above, there are three major types of blinds. There are more, but they majorly fall under these three which we would be explaining.

    ROLLER BLINDS

A roller blind is a cloth panel that is fitted at the top of a window frame. Its movements are controlled by using a chain attached to the top side of the frame, though there are motorised options available. These motorised or smart blinds also allow you to connect to a home app setup like Alexa, so you can control it remotely with your voice.

Roller blinds can be used on any window style, bi-patio doors, roof windows, etc., as long as they’re made to measure, to ensure the perfect fit. They’re also very suitable for bathrooms and kitchens, as long as the material used is strong enough to withstand spills, stains, etc.

Roller blinds are convenient for use as they’re strong, versatile and can be used in different environments. Since they can also be motorised, they ensure maximum convenience. This means that you don’t have to wake up and open your blinds, when you can either pre-set it or do it from the comfort of your bed, using a remote.

Additionally, it is advisable to use roller blinds for reading if you have sensitive eyes, as they block out light completely. This way, you can choose to use a reading lamp and control the level of light.

    VENETIAN BLINDS

Venetian blinds are blinds that have slats placed in between horizontally. They can be made from different materials like plastic, aluminium or wood. The control is located at the top of the frame, and some are motorised, depending on your choice.

They’re a great alternative to window shutters and a cheaper option too. They offer control of light that comes into the room, though it is not advisable if you’re the type of person that prefers blackout environments, as little amounts of light will pass through the slats.

Additionally, they’re preferable for living rooms, as opposed to roller blinds that can be used in any part of the home.

If you like using natural light to read, then using Venetian blinds for reading is a more suited option for you. This way, you can sit with your favourite drink by the window and enjoy flipping through the pages of your choice book.

    VERTICAL BLINDS

These blinds are similar to Venetian blinds, just that their slats are placed vertically. They are operated by a cord at the top of the frame which allows the vertical slats to slide over each other. However, these vertical slats are held together by cords below.

Vertical blinds are made with much lighter material, which allows for overlapping and is great for creating blackout environments.

They’re perfect for big windows and French doors because of their simple design. Due to their large size, however, cleaning is a huge chore, as you have to clean each slat individually.

Also, you can use vertical window blinds for reading, as they allow maximum control of light entering your living room.

    BENEFITS OF WINDOW BLINDS

Window blinds are known to have more functionality and benefits, hence why experts advise more people to use them in their homes. Here are some benefits of window blinds you should know:

    • Helps to control the amount of light entering a room

Window blinds give you the power to control the amount of light you need in your room. You could choose to raise them completely, halfway or not at all. This is very ideal if you’re light-sensitive, as you can use the flexibility of window blinds for reading or watching movies or even when you want to sleep. It is easy to do this by simply controlling the light that comes in or leaving it in blackout mode and using your light source or not.

      • Versatility in style

Window blinds are versatile in style, choice of material, size, and so on. This makes it easy for you to choose any style to match your furniture or needs.

        • Complete privacy

Window blinds ensure complete privacy, as you can control how you want it to be. Also, you can opt for thicker material to ensure that the interior of your house is kept from the view of strangers.

          • Easy maintenance

Unlike curtains that require washing almost every season, blinds require less. All you have to do is clean with some water and a microfibre cloth, to remove dust. You don’t have to change it every time unless you want a change in your interior decor.

            CONCLUSION

Window blinds are essential for every home, due to how beneficial they are. Before buying window blinds, it is essential know the types and purposes they serve. This will help you make an informed decision on the type of window blinds best suited for your home.
