Where faux wood beats the real thing

Put a timber venetian above a kitchen sink and in two years the slats will have moved. Put a faux wood there and nothing happens. The slats are PVC through and through, so steam, splashes and the swing between a cold morning and a hot oven don't touch them. That's the entire reason the range exists, and it's why kitchens, bathrooms, en suites, utility rooms and conservatories end up with faux wood rather than wood.

The finish has caught up with the claim. A grained faux wood at two metres is hard to tell from timber, and the colour stays where it started instead of fading on the sunny side of a bay.

Finishes

Wood grain for the rooms where it's standing in for timber. Silk for a flatter, more contemporary look. High shine where you want the slats to catch light, which works in a dark bathroom and looks wrong almost everywhere else. Coordinating or contrasting tapes are available on the 50mm slat width, so the blind can either disappear into the window or make a feature of it.

The material is fire retardant as well as moisture resistant, which matters for rental properties, holiday lets and commercial fit-outs where that gets asked about.

Hard wearing, which is a practical point not a slogan

A kitchen blind gets handled several times a day with whatever is on your hands. A faux wood slat wipes clean, doesn't stain, and doesn't mind being knocked. In a family house the blinds that fail first are almost always the ones in the busiest rooms, and this is the range built for exactly that.

Controls and child safety

Cord lift with a wand or cord tilt as standard. Every blind we fit carries the BS EN 13120 breakaway connectors, and the cleat or tensioner goes on the wall at the installation rather than being left in the packaging. Motorised versions are available, and we're Somfy certified installers if the blind has to sit inside an existing system.

What faux wood venetians cost

Priced per opening. Slat width and finish first, then size, then tapes and valance. Faux wood generally sits a little under real timber for the same window, which is worth knowing if you're pricing a whole house and want wood in the living room and faux in the kitchen.

Common questions

Will it look cheap next to real wood?

Not in the grained finishes, and not from any normal viewing distance. Where you'd notice is a room with both in the same sightline, so we usually keep one material per room.

Can it go in a wet room or a shower enclosure?

Over a bath or in a steamy bathroom, yes. Inside a shower enclosure, no, because standing water gets into the headrail.

How heavy is it?

Heavier than timber, which limits how wide a single blind can go before the lift gets stiff. A wide window is better as two blinds. We work out where that line falls at the measure.

Can I clean it properly?

Yes, a damp cloth and a mild detergent, slat by slat if it needs it. This is the one range in the house you can genuinely scrub.
