Shutters in Newbury
Smart Blinds & Shutters makes and fits plantation shutters across Newbury and West Berkshire. The showroom is at 26 High Street, Thatcham, three miles up the A4, which makes Newbury the shortest run we make and the easiest place to get a second visit if something needs adjusting.
This page is shutters only. Blinds, awnings and the rest of the range are on the Newbury page.
Six styles, and what each one is for
Full height is one set of panels from sill to head. It's the default, and it's what most of the Victorian and Edwardian housing around Newbury town centre takes.
Tier on tier splits at the transom so top and bottom work independently. Original sash windows were built for exactly this, which is why period homes in Speen, Wash Common and the older streets off the Andover Road tend to end up with it.
Cafe style dresses the bottom half only, for a kitchen or a front room that looks onto a pavement.
Tracked panels slide along a rail instead of swinging, which is what wide patio and bi-fold openings need. Shaped panels are cut to arches, angles and circles, which is most of what the village properties around Hungerford, Kingsclere, Chieveley and Cold Ash ask for, because the openings were never square to start with. Solid panels drop the louvres altogether for blackout or a period-correct look.
Hardwood or faux wood
Both are made to order by a global shutter manufacturer, and both come in our painted finishes or a colour matched to something you already have. Hardwood holds paint and stain better and goes in living rooms and bedrooms. Faux wood shrugs off steam and splashes, so it's the one for bathrooms, en suites and anywhere over a sink. Mixing the two through a house is normal and they're finished to match.
The shutters page has the brochure if you want to look before anyone visits.
What a set of shutters costs
There's no price list, because shutters are priced per opening. The size, the number of panels, hardwood against faux, the finish and whether the opening is shaped all move the figure, and a bay counts as three or four frames rather than one.
You get the number at the home visit, in writing. The visit is free and there's nothing to pay until you order. A shaped opening in an old cottage costs more than a square one in a new build, and we'd rather tell you that while we're standing in front of it.
The guarantee
Shutters carry 36 months from the date of order, on the shutters and on the fitting. Three times what a standard blind carries, and it's written into clause 9.2 of our terms and conditions. One thing worth knowing: a £50 call-out applies to every shutter warranty visit, including Newbury, even though the town sits inside the five-mile radius that waives it on other products.
Booking a home visit
Call 01635 866600 or use the contact page. We bring the sample frames and the finish cards to you, measure every opening and quote there and then. Being three miles away, a Newbury measure and a Newbury fit rarely need two trips for anything we forgot.
You can also walk into the Thatcham showroom and work a shutter before you order, which is the one thing a photograph can't tell you. Shutters in Reading covers the other side of the county, the Berkshire page lists everywhere we go, and our work shows finished jobs.
